Entrepreneur Of The Year (EoY) 2004 Finalists: Rijanto Joesoef, Director,
PT Surya Multi Indopack, started his entrepreneurial journey by leading
a family company. Three years after his father established PT Surya
Multi Indopack (SMI) in 1983 to manufacture flexible packaging. Rijanto
joined the company after graduating as an industrial engineer from a
U.S. university.
Riyanto took control of the business in 1986 at a time when it was not
performing well and in crisis. Riyanto turned the company round to
become an industry leader with an enviable base of blue chip customers.
Rijanto’s vision and instincts are among the significant factors that
have helped the company become one of the largest producers and
exporters of flexible packing in Indonesia. Rijanto is not reluctant to
take risks providing they are carefully evaluated and may contribute
towards and the ultimate goal of satisfying customers.
SMI currently has 400 employees and three offices (two in Surabaya and
one in Jakarta). It has managed to retain an exceptionally high rate of
customer satisfaction and remain as the preferred supplier of Unilever
Indonesia for four years in a row (2000-2003). Rijanto’s philosophy for
